Four years of PaRx: are you prescribing nature yet?

PaRx, Canada’s national, evidence-based nature prescription program, recently marked a monumental achievement: one million prescriptions for nature have been issued! In just four years, 18,000+ healthcare providers have facilitated one million connections with nature. That's one million encounters motivating patients to experience the profound health benefits of being outdoors.

Time in nature is linked to positive impacts like reducing blood pressure, lowering cholesterol levels, and alleviated anxiety and depression. Are you prescribing nature yet?

Any licensed health care professional can register with PaRx and receive a toolkit that makes nature prescribing easy, fun, and effective. PaRx also makes getting into nature easier for its patients by offering special benefits like free Parks Canada Discovery Passes.

5 Reasons To Prescribe Nature with PaRx

1. It's easy and effective. Health-care providers are always looking for simple, practical interventions they can make to improve their patients’ lives. The beauty of PaRx is that almost anyone can increase the time they spend in nature, no matter what their physical abilities are or where they live. A growing body of research suggests that spending time in nature has a wide range of positive effects on human health, from reduced chronic disease to improved birth outcomes—over and above the benefits of exercise. Learn more about the health benefits of nature here.

2. Writing it down works better. Studies suggest that written prescriptions are better received than oral advice in motivating patients to make a change.

3. Patients trust their health-care providers. Surveys reveal that health-care providers consistently rank among the most trusted professionals in the country. When we speak, people listen.

4. Prescribing nature is good for the earth. Research shows that people who are more connected to nature do more to protect it. So not only are you improving your patients’ health, but you’re also doing your part for the planet.

5. We’re reducing barriers for your patients. To ensure that everyone in Canada has ready access to the health benefits of nature, PaRx is collaborating with outdoor organizations like Parks Canada to provide free or discounted access to green and blue spaces for patients in most need.

PaRx: Getting British Columbians Closer to Nature For Their Health

With a network of over 18,000 Canadian healthcare providers prescribing nature, we are proud to endorse PaRx, Canada's national, evidence-based nature prescription program.

In a groundbreaking first for nature prescriptions, PaRx has teamed up with mobility organizations Evo and Lime to make it easier for British Columbians to access the outdoors for their health. A survey last spring of over 2000 Canadians by Protect Our Winters found 47% of them reporting that a lack of transportation deterred them from participating in outdoor activities.

Any licensed health care professional can register with PaRx, and receive a toolkit that makes nature prescribing easy, fun, and effective. PaRx also makes getting into nature easier for its patients by offering special discounts with its nature-forward partners like Parks Canada, UBC Botanical Gardens, Bloedel Conservatory, and Milner Gardens and Woodland.

Spending time in nature not only feels good, but it’s proven to be good for our health and the health of our planet too! Learn more at parkprescriptions.ca.

Get outside for your heath, doctor's orders!

Hundreds of scientific studies over several decades show that spending more time in nature can have incredible physical and mental health benefits in several respects, regardless of age.

Spending time in nature:

Drops your risk of chronic disease like asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Busts stress by reducing your cortisol levels and heart rate variability.

Boosts your immune system.

Reduces your risk of dementia by 36%.

Makes you smarter, improving your memory, creativity, and focus.

Supercharges the effects of exercise.

Increasing outdoor time for your health is so well proven that nature is being adopted worldwide as a health intervention and in Canada, healthcare providers can even write you a prescription for it with BC Parks Foundation’s PaRx program. Nature is becoming the fourth pillar of health —just as important for staying healthy as good nutrition, regular exercise and sleep.

Next time you step outside, remember that it not only feels good, but it’s also doing wonders for your health! Check out parkprescriptions.ca to learn more.
